Ranked: 4 Games to Play One-Handed During a Football Game

AGC Lab read this off the Google Trends screen for the US, "past 7 days", on September 15, 2026. Five of the top eight entries were football-related: Cowboys vs Giants at 2M+, NFL standings at 2M+, Saints vs Lions and Packers vs Vikings at 1M+ each, Monday Night Football at 200K+. Three of those five are single matchups; the other two are a standings lookup and the name of a broadcast slot. The only gaming term anywhere near that was World of Warcraft: Forever at 200K+, announced at BlizzCon on September 12.

So the useful question this week isn't which game is trending. It's what you can do on a phone while a game is on.

What a game has to survive next to a broadcast

Phone games fail beside a live match for one of three reasons. You run out of hands, you lose the sound, or you can't put it down.

Card graphic of the three second-screen rules: one-handed controls, nothing lost when muted, droppable mid-play

One hand. The other one has popcorn, a drink, or the remote in it. Anything needing two thumbs at once is gone.

Overhead flat-lay of a TV remote, a bowl of popcorn, a soda cup, a phone with its screen lit, and a red football helmet

Muted. The TV owns the audio. A game that hides information in its sound effects is a game you're playing at half strength all evening.

Droppable. A touchdown happens and the phone goes face down. The game has to forgive that. The good ones keep earning while it's down there.

Four games, same three rules

Table scoring Balatro, KickCat, Monument Valley and Clash of Clans against one hand, sound off and stop anytime

Balatro — short runs, but hard to abandon

A deck-building roguelike where jokers break poker hands open and the score snowballs. It won the mobile category at The Game Awards in 2024 and picked up an Apple Design Award in 2025. Portrait mode works one-handed, and muting it costs you nothing.

Balatro stumbles on the third rule, droppability. Once a run is going you don't really want to stop, and a face-down phone in the middle of one leaves the run in limbo.

KickCat — the only one that earns while it's closed

Who it's for: anyone watching in 30-second glances. First run: within three minutes you're picking 1 of 3 skill cards. What's good: this cat is a coward, which is why it wears a helmet. It charges in with its eyes closed, and every enemy across all 300 stages is a dog. What's not: no iOS version yet. Cost to play free: free with ads and in-app purchases. Progress doesn't stop when the app does, the vault just fills, and it stops filling at 12 hours, so opening it twice a day loses you nothing. (Figures as of the September 15, 2026 game data, published in the item codex.)

KickCat clears the droppability rule because it is an idle game. The minutes your phone spends face down count as income instead of loss.

Monument Valley — right game, wrong time slot

The 2015 BAFTA winner in the mobile and handheld category. It works one-handed and it forgives being put down at any point.

The catch is the sound. Half of what makes it work is the music and the audio cues, and burying that under a broadcast wastes a genuinely good game. Save it for after the final whistle.

Clash of Clans — check in like a scout

A 2012 strategy game that Google Play named its best multi-device game of 2024. Building takes real time, so the natural rhythm is to open it, check, and close it again. That maps neatly onto commercial breaks.

What to actually open tonight

  • If you want to watch the game: KickCat or Clash of Clans. Both keep moving while closed.
  • If the broadcast has long dead stretches: Balatro. Short runs, different every time.
  • If you're still up after it ends: Monument Valley. That's its hour.

For KickCat's real numbers, all 24 balls and their upgrade curves sit in the item codex exactly as the game stores them, and Churu Road shows the stage structure. Last week's piece on old games taking over the charts runs on the same thread.

A cat still wearing its helmet, asleep on the sofa in a dark living room after the game, phone glowing beside it

Install it from Google Play before kickoff and run one stage. By halftime there's something waiting in the vault. Fall asleep right after the final whistle and it keeps filling for twelve hours.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What makes a mobile game good to play while watching a match?

Three things: it works with one hand, it loses no information when muted, and it survives being dropped mid-play. This piece scored Balatro, KickCat, Monument Valley and Clash of Clans against those rules, and three of the four passed.

Why are idle games better as a second screen?

Because they keep earning while the app is closed. KickCat's vault fills while you're not connected and stops at 12 hours, so the time your phone spends face down during a game counts as progress rather than lost time.
